2010 Emmys Fashion Rundown

As a self-described TV addict, I had to watch the Emmys. I was quite pleased when some of my favorite shows won (Yay, Modern Family!), but considering most of the shows I usually watch don't typically receive Emmy nominations, I choose to watch for the fashion. I watched the pre-show on E, relishing in the total awkwardness that is Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana, laughing when they made comments that clearly make who they were interviewing uncomfortable. While my I have a special place in my heart for last year's host, the amazing Neil Patrick Harris, I'll admit that Jimmy Fallon didn't do all that bad. And, the opening number with Glee and Tina Fey was pretty funny.

Of course, I also watch to analyze the fashion, texting my mother throughout the show with my opinions on whose wearing what, and who deserved to win. I'm choosing to ignore the ones I didn't like this time. (*cough* January Jones.) I'm limiting myself to just a few dresses, because I could go on forever, really.

1. Lea Michelle- Yes, she comes off as a brat when being interviewed, but this birthday girl looks gorgeous head to toe. I  personally love the color and all the ruffles of this dress.

2. Claire Danes - This may be my favorite dress of the night. Just gorgeous.

3. Jamya Mays - Not a huge fan of her hairstyle choice, but I do like this dress. The color (navy seemed to be a trend last night) suits her well. And I like all the ruffles/detail.

4. Emily Blunt - I actually hate this dress, and think she looks about 20 years older than she really is in this photograph. However, I wanted to mention that I thought it was hilarious when Ryan Seacrest asked her husband, the beautiful John Krasinski what she was wearing. His response, "uuuhhhh lavender?" Definitely laughed for a good five minutes. What, you didn't think that was funny?

5. Mark Salling - Yeah, I just added him purely because I have a slight crush on him. Mark, I would never egg your car like your (poorly dressed) co-star allegedly did.

6. Jennifer Carpenter and Michael C. Hall - I don't watch Dexter, never seen a single episode (my brother is mortified somewhere.) However, they get my vote for best dressed couple of the night. They just have so much class, and look amazing. Jennifer's dress is stunning. I think I was in a sequin and sparkles mood last night, as many of those dresses made my favorites.

Some Honorable Mentions:
  • Tina Fey
  • Sarah Hyland (Modern Family)
  • Julie Bowen
  • Eva Longoria
  • Kim Kardashian
  • Sophia Veragara

Tumblr

I really enjoy Tumblr, and given that the site just hit a whopping 1 billion posts, I know that there's no way I'm the only person who enjoys the site! Right now, I just enjoy it as a way to post photos or quotes I find that interest me, but I definitely can see the site evolving into something more as mainstream media is picking up on the site's potential . It's evolving into a blogging platform, but also as a place to quickly and easily reblog or "like" other people's posts, which makes it more interactive than a typical blog. Its so easy and very user-friendly. I could easily spend hours perusing my "dashboard," reblogging and posting photos I find on Flickr or the occasional picture I took.

I currently don't use mine to keep up with news or follow any mainstream people, but I can see (and appreciate) that it's heading in that direction. For now, I'll stick to using it to dream about new places I want to travel, find inspiration quotes (they have an endless supply, so it seems) salivate over delicious plates of food, and get my Gossip Girl/Grey's Anatomy photo fix!

Excited for fall

I love fall, and this year, I feel like it honestly could not come soon enough. This summer has been hot and sticky and I am ready to retire my shorts and flip flops. I'm counting down the days until I can break out my boots worn with leggings or skinny jeans, my trench coats, and no longer have to order iced coffees. I can't wait until leaves start to change colors and I can sleep with my windows open instead of stuffy air conditioner. I'm dying for my TV shows to start back up (hello, Gossip Girl, Grey's Anatomy and How I Met Your Mother!) What I really can't wait for, is college football and NHL hockey to start. Yes, I am a total nerd completely obsessed with "my" two teams. I'll be honest, they're the only two teams I care about and I have a Slingbox (best invention ever) connected to my parent's TV so I can catch my games.

How gorgeous are these Sam Edelman boots? If I had an extra $200 in my pocket (the joys of an intern salary = no money), I'd be buying these!

Already planned next weekend around this! Thanks for the reminder, Google!

Hello, fall in the District!

What are you most looking forward to for fall?

Favorite Museum: The Newseum!

I haven't lived in the District long enough to have a routine weekend or "usual" hangouts. Let's be honest, my first month here involved weekends holed up in my apartment watching crappy television and movies on my Netflix instant stream, calling my best friend and telling her I wished she would move here (which sadly, will not happen.) As time goes on (has it really been six months?), I'm slowly beginning to develop my own DC Favorites, that's more than just "hey, I walked past the White House for the millionth time." (While, yes, it's pretty awesome to take a mid-day lunch break from work and take a stroll past the White House like it's no big deal, there's more to DC than that.)

The first thing that comes to mind, (besides the monuments) is my all-time favorite museum, that I think probably gets overlooked, The Newseum.

Yes, this is one museum you must pay for, but it is 100 percent worth it, particularly if you work in/with the media, like I do. I walked out of my first visit with a year long membership, which I can honestly say was money well spent for unlimited visits, and to attend members-only events (I'm going to hear the lead meteorologist from Hurricane Katrina speak in a few weeks, I'm really excited.)

There are so many great exhibits, from a spectacularly done 9/11 exhibit, a showcase of Pulitzer Prize winning photographs, and an exhibit about how major events in the world were covered (examples include the Oklahoma City bombing, the fall of the Berlin Wall, etc.). My favorite exhibit actually is the daily headlines from newspapers all 50 states, and various countries around the world. It's amazing to look at, and compare what each state or country believes is "important news" for the day. It's just fascinating to see similarities across the world, and realize how similar we all are on some levels, while noting huge differences in how we cover our media at the same time.

Plus, the view is fabulous, and how cool is it that they film This Week with Christiane Amanpour for ABC News there? Enough of my rambling, but I highly suggest you take a detour from the Smithsonian museums, and check out this amazing place!

 The awesome view.

The obligatory introduction post

I feel obligated to make some sort of introductory post, considering this is my first time posting in my brand spanking new blog. However, I always end up feeling awkward when writing these sorts of things, so lets see how this goes! I've wanted a blog for the longest time, and I realized that now is as good of a time as any to begin.

So, welcome to my little corner of the blogosphere. You're sure to hear about my love of reading, politics, television, food, caffeine (of course) and traveling. I'm a 20-something girl transplanted from the Midwest to Washington, DC in hopes of following my dreams of having a career in Public Relations. Join me on my journey into the "real world," navigating entry-level public public relations and discussing life in the the nation's capitol, and how a small town girl makes it in the city. While I can guarantee my life is nothing like "The Real Housewives of DC," I hope there will be some laughs along the way.
